Qualifying adjectives

Today’s topic is exciting because we will be able to describe a person’s physical appearance and/ or personality with the help of “qualifying adjectives”. Look at the following grammar information to understand this topic. It's vital that you take your own notes to internalise the information provided.

Concept 1:Use of qualifying adjectives

We use “Qualifying adjectives” after verb to be when we describe people’s physical appareance and personality.

Subject + Verb to be (is/am/are) + qualifying adjevtive

Example
• He is ugly.
• She is beautiful.
• We are angry.
• They are thirsty.
• I am handsome.
• You are slim.

Adjective + Noun

Example
• Short boy.
• Intelligent woman.
• Thirsty children.
• Handsome man.
• Slim lady.
• Ugly animal.

You are going to read a letter from someone to his parents. He describes the family in Arizona he is staying with for the summer. Try to pay close attention to the words he uses to describe the people he mentions. Does an exchange program sound interesting to you?

I am happy to tell you that the exchange program this summer is perfect for me. I know I am with a good family. The Johnson family is very funny, loud and happy. The father is very much like your dad. He is tall, strong and most of the time he is serious. But once when he is home, he is the opposite. Mrs Johnson sings every day and loves to cook. She is an excellent cook. She is short beautiful and slim. Johnny is like my best friend, we are smart, athletic and strong like Mr Johnson. Finally, there is Nancy. She is terrific, slim and intelligent. She is very friendly, and I love her laugh.

Mom and dad, the people I live with, and Arizona is different. The weather is very hot and dry. Everyone is always in a hurry. The stores are very clean and cool. The parks are very modern, new and fun.

I know this summer is full of good experiences.

Your family

Where do you live? Who do you live with? What does your father look like? What is your mother like? What are your siblings like? Do they look alike?

Write a text to describe your family using the information from the previous activities. Mention where you and your family live.

Write a 40 to 50 words to describe your family to a pen pal in another city. Make sure to mention their physical aspects and the town you are staying in. Make sure to include as many adjectives as you can.

Each family is made of people with different physical appearance and attitude. By reason, we want like to know about yours. Remember to base all your work on the rubrics to turn in a well-done exercise.

Look at the following description of this family. Based on this example, record yourself describing your family.

This is my family, I have two brothers. Brian is very active and thin. He likes to play soccer and play with my other brother Jonathan. Opposite to Brian Jonathan is shy but very friendly once he’s comfortable. My father is Anthony, he is a typical father. A serious man, with a strong character. He likes to do many handyman org. I think he’s very intelligent and imaginative. Next is my mom Jennifer. She is beautiful, and an excellent cook. When she goes out to dinner with my father, she looks elegant. Finally, it’s me, I am Judith, I consider myself a smart girl, funny and very active. I practice basketball, and I am a cheerleader.
