Verbs that are followed by an action or an activity (verb + ing)

How can we say that we like something?

We can use like, love, don’t like (dislike) or hate to say how we feel about an activity.
Examples:

  • She loves listening to music.
  • I like playing soccer.
  • He doesn’t like eating vegetables.
  • He dislikes eating bread.

And after these verbs we use ING.

Examples:

  • I love using the computer.
  • He doesn´t like shopping.
  • She hates reading.

In this topic, we will learn how to use like, love, dislike and hate to say if we like or hate an activity that we do.
So in this section, we are going to work with the following activities:

Content

In this section you will find the grammatical rules to use like, love, don't like and hate + ING. You will find some activities to practice this topic.

Reading

You will read two different readings about Bob and Anna's hobbies and interests. Use this information you will say if the sentences given are True or False.

Listening

You will listen to Paul and Linette's descriptions about their typical day, and you will complete a chart.

Writing

You will complete a paragraph trying to use the verbs given in the correct form. Then you will develop your writing using the previous model.

Speaking

You will interview a partner using the chart in this section. Then you will try to find if your friend is your perfect partner or not. Then you will record yourself to present your findings.

Self-assessment

You will unscramble some sentences to practice the rules of this topic.

This topic is essential because it is a useful tool to express your degree of likeness. In other words, when you like doing an activity you can say:

I love dancing with my girlfriend.

Or if you do not like doing something or feel bad about it you can say:

I hate washing the dishes.

Use the verbs like, love, hate and dislike to describe how much you like or dislike something that you regularly do. We can use hate, like, and love with an -ing ending.

Note:
Don’t like, Dislike and Hate are used with a negative meaning.

Read about the following people and discover about their hobbies and interests.

In this activity, you are going to read about Bob and Anna’s hobbies and interests. Once you have read them, decide if the information is True or False.

Bob is a university student. In the week Bob goes to the University and takes his classes. He has a lot of homework to do but when he has free time he relaxes at home. He sometimes surfs the net, he loves downloading music for his iphone. He likes working or doing his homework listening to his favorite music.

Bob is very musical, he likes playing the guitar, he plays the piano too but he loves playing the drums in the band. Bob and his friends have a band and they practice on the weekends at Paul’s place.

Anna is a very active person. She loves all outdoor activities. Every morning, she likes going jogging in a park near her house. Then, she goes back home and she likes cycling to work. Sometimes when there is bad weather, she goes by bus to work.

In the afternoon, she has different activities. On Mondays and Wednesdays she goes to gymnastics. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, she goes to the gym and takes zumba classes. She doesn’t like watching TV because she thinks it is boring.

On the weekends, she always takes a backpack with her, she packs something to eat, water and some clothes and she goes to the mountains. She loves going hiking with her friends even though sometimes she goes hiking alone.

Now, it is your turn. Follow this example and write a short 50-80 word paragraph about your interests. Remember that you can write about your favourite activity, when you do it and if you do it alone or with some friends.

Sometimes it is hard to find a perfect partner to spend your weekend, so ask one of your classmates or friends about their weekend activities. Find out if he is your ideal partner.

Read and ask the following questions to your friend.
