Blackout on Christmas Eve

Last Christmas Eve my wife and I had a family dinner at our apartment.

I think the day started well and by the evening we (1) most of the work. Everyone (2) to make the meal a successful experience. We (3) the turkey in the oven earlier that day. The apartment smelled tasty. My niece (4) setting the table for the dinner. My sister in-law (5) an apple salad for dessert. Sarah, my wife, (6) the stove to start cooking the vegetables when the lights went out. The oven stopped working! So, she couldn’t cook the vegetables. The turkey wouldn’t finish cooking as well.

We waited, we went for a walk, we sang Christmas carols, and Grandpa fell asleep. That Christmas Eve dinner was turning into a nightmare.

We (7) more than four hours by the time the power came back on. We almost (8) all hope.

Dinner was late that night, but everyone thinks it was a Christmas Eve we will never forget.
